Point Seche - Kaltnadel - Dry Point
Engraving
Drypoint is a direct intaglio technique for engraving
metal, usually a zinc or copper plate. Unlike other techniques,
it does not involve the use of acids to help burn in the image
into the plate.
The artist bears down on the metal plate using a
sharp stylus with a steel or diamond point. As the stylus moves
along the plate it pushes up metal shavings which give a strong
furry-looking edge. This furry edge is sometimes called the beard.
The first plates printed exhibit this characteristic more strongly...
it fades as the shavings are flattened with successive printings.
