Martin Lauterberg is one of the most important Swiss artists of the mid-20th Century. A native of Bern, he was known for his still lifes and landscapes in an expressionist style. His friends included Hermann Hesse, Cuno Amiet, and other leading artists of his time.
Born the son of a priest in 1898, Lauterburg grew up in the house in Neuenegg (near Bern) that had earlier been the childhood home of the well-known engraver Karl Stauffer-Bern. He began University in Neuchatel where he studied philosophy. After a semester he moved to the Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich were he studied with Robert Engels and Julius Diez. He became a member of the Neue Secession.
Lauterburg played the piano (Chopin, Liszt, Schumann) throughout his life.
