Theophil Preiswerk is an important Swiss artist of the turn of the century. He was a student in the atelier of Charles Gleyre in paris in the 1860s, and later studdied in Munich with Karl Otto and Karl von Piloty.

He was influenced by the German realists including Hans Thoma and Wilhelm Leibl.

Perhaps the deepest influence on his work was the Swiss symbolist Arnold Boecklin. Preiswerk followed Boecklin to Florence in 1874 and lived in Italy for several years. He returned to Switzerland in the 1880s, but continued to visit Italy throughout his life.

He is listed in major art dictionaries including the Benezit.
