Three Sculpted Swiss Escabelles
Three wonderful Swiss "Escabelle" chairs made in the late 19th or early 20th Century. Nice warm wood tone. Interesting sculpted backs.
These chairs were traditionally women's chairs at the table. They
were designed without sides so that the ladies large skirts could
flow gracefully around them.
They make great fireside chairs.
In German chairs with this form are sometimes called "Galgenstabellen" - or "Gallows chairs, based on the form of the back support area (see third photo down).
