JC HOHMANN
ASIAE Recentissima Delineatio
This fascinating map of Asia was published
around 1720 and one of the earliest works by
Hohmann Heirs.
The map depicts Compagnie Land as a partial
unknown island above Japan and Kamchatka. The
legendary lake of Chiamay (Chiang Mai) is shown
in the middle of Tibet. This lake does not exist,
but from ancient times maps showed it as the
source of the great rivers of Asia.
The top cartouche shows a ceremonial procession
- the lower an Asian king holds court.
The map extends to Scandinavia in the top left,
to Nova Hollandia lower right.
Nicely framed in antique gilt frame.
