Zenz Prinoth
Polychrome Wooden Carving of St. Catherine
Zenz Prinoth is a well known sculptor from Ortesei, Val Gardena, in the Italian Dolomites. The Val Gardena is a region famous for its wood carvings. The Prinoth family has been active in the art for generations and Zenz's son Luca Prinoth is carrying on the tradition today.
Saint Catherine of Alexandria - also known as St. Catherine of the Wheel lived in the 4th Century. She tried to convince the Roman Emperor to end his persecution of Christians, but was thrown into prison. The Roman's tried to execute her on the "Breaking Wheel" but the wheel itself broke. St. Catherine was then beheaded.
She is shown here, as is traditional for the iconography of this saint, with her "attribute" - the broken wheel.
