Attic Black Figured lekythos
Two Athletes and a paidotribes (trainer)

The Vase depicted is in the collection of the British Museum
(BM Vases B 576)

Original 18th Century engraving from "Les Antiquites d'Hancarville, one of the most beautiful books ever published.

Please note that these engravings are in superb clean condition. The old handlaid paper under our scanner creates a shadowing effect, which does not exist. The background to each vase is clear and clean. There are wide margins around each sheet which are not shown in this scan (only the platemark area was scanned).

This amazing work was the result of a collaboration between Sir William Hamilton (1730-1803), the British envoy in Naples, and the French art dealer and adventurer Pierre-François Hugues d’Hancarville (1719-1805).

The full title of the work, which was published in four volumes in Naples between 1766 and 1776 was: Antiquités Etrusques, Grecques et Romaines, tirées du Cabinet de M. William Hamilton, Envoyé extraordinaire et plenipotentaire de S.M. Britannique en Cours de Naples.
