Handcolored copperplate print. Stipple engraving. Fine original coloring. Circa 1815

 

We believe this must be Jean-Baptiste Bessieres, who served in Napoleon's Italian campaign and who was made a Marechal d'Empire. Bessieres was born on August 6, 1769 and was killed in battle on May 1, 1813.

 

Text reads: N. Bessieres, Duc d'Istrie, Marechal de l'Empire, Decore du Grand Aigle de la Legione d'Honneur - Ne a Pressac (Lot) 1769

 

Dimensions: 8.5 X 11.5 inches

 

Condition: Sheet has considerable foxing and spotting extending close to the image as shown. There is a light streak on the forhead of the portrait.
