Frederic, named King of Wurtemberg by Napoleon

Frederic the Duke of Wurtemberg was married twice. A daugher from his first marriage - Catherine - married Jerome Bonaparte, Napoleon's younger brother. Frederics second marriage was to Pricess Charlotte of Wales, the oldest daughter of King George III and Queen Charlotte.

Frederic originally opposed the French and fled to Vienna when Napoleon's army occupied Wurtemberg in 1800. But he was eventually convinced by Napoleon to join the Confederation of the Rhein, putting him in direct conflict with his father in law the King of England

Later as Napoleon's empire began to fall apart, Frederic again switched sides, joining the Allies in 1813.
 
Frederic was quite obese, and Napoleon is said to have made the following comment about him: "Dieu l'a créé pour démonter à quel point la peau humaine est extensible !"

"God created him in order to demonstrate to what extent human skin is extendable."

Condition: Light toning and spotting. Two small pinholes in outer left margin.
