Clement Metternich-Winnebourg

The Austrian statesman Prince Klemens Metternich was among the most important diplomats of the first half of the 19th Century.

Admired by later politicans including Henry Kissinger as a master of Realpolitik, Metternich navigated the ship of Austrian state through the treacherous waters of the Napoleonic period. It was Metternich who orchestrated the marriage of the Austrian emperor's daughter Marie Louise to Napoleon in 1810, even while scheming to weaken the French emperor.

The period in between Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in 1815 and the Revolutions of 1848 is often referred to as the Age of Metternich. He chaired the Congress of Vienna where the major powers redrew the map of post-Napoleonic Europe.
