Engraved by Guyard after an drawing by Pancrace Bessa (1772-1835).
Pancrace Bessa was one of the
greatest 19th century botanical illustrators. He was trained by
Redoute, and began illustrating major works on botany in 1808.
Bessa
enjoyed the patronage of the Duchesse de Berry and her father in
law, King Charles X of France. His major works include "L'Herbier
Generale de L'Amateur" and "Flore Des Jardiniers."
Bessa's work's are widely reproduced
and sold as posters. This piece is not a reproduction but an original
engraving on handlaid chainlinked paper. It dates to sometime between
1810 and 1830.
