Thomas Carr of Lincoln - The well known dealer in Almanacks, Fish & c. was born at Hexthorpe near Doncaster, and was christened on the 19th of October 1718.

A copy of this engraving from the Cambridge University collection was reproduced in "The Nature of the Book: Print and Knoweldge in the Making (Adrian Johns, 1989) as an example of the stage in book history when traving salesmen or "chapmen" walked town to town selling a combination of printed booklets and other wares.

Almanacs, like those sold by this English chapman, are one of the oldest forms of publication, dating back to the astronomical and meteorological calendars of ancient Greece.
