(Dr. Wilhelm Peter's Natural History Trip to
Mozambique).
The "Naturwissenschaftliche
Reise nach Mossambique... in den Jahren 1842 bis
1848 ausgeführt" was a nine volumne
set published in Berlin from 1852-1882.
Wilhelm Peters (1815-1883) was the assistant of
Johannes Müller, the great anatomist and
became the director of the Berlin Zoological Museum.
Peters plan to undertake an exploration
of Mozambique was supported by Müller and
by Alexander von Humboldt, who was then also in
Berlin. In September 1842 the naturalist set off
aboard a Portuguese convict ship first to Angola
and eventually to Mozambique where he arrived
in June 1843. He was the first scientist to document
many species in the region.
