Potrait of
Bertel Thorvaldsen
19th Century Lithograph after the painting by Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg
Berthel Thorvaldsen (19 November 1770 – 24 March 1844) was a Danish/Icelandic neoclassical sculptor, and one of Denmark's best known artists. One of Thorvaldsen's most famous works is the Lion of Lucerne.
This beautiful large format 19th Century lithograph shows the artist sitting elegantly, hands folded across his knees, in front of a classical frieze.
This antique lithograph reproduced the well known portrait of Thorvaldsen by his friend and colleague the Danish history painter C. W. Eckersberg (1783-1853). Eckersberg painted Thorvaldsen in Rome in 1814, during the three year period the artists spent studying and working in Italy.
