1771 - From "A New History of the Bible"

A fascinating plan of the ancient walled city of Babylon (in today's Al Hillah in Central Iraq, around 60 miles south of Baghdad).

The Engraving shows the famous hanging gardens, one of the wonders of the ancient world, the tower of Babel other monuments.

In the foreground, noblemen ride on an elephant and camel.

Thomas Stackhouse was a biblical scholar and clergyman from Berkshire. His A History of the Holy Bible" was much acclaimed during the 18th Century. Thomas Jefferson had a copy in his library at Monticello.

Condition: Sheet is lightly toned. A faint crease runs on an angle through the lower left side. Edges are rough, but easily covered by matting.
