17th Century View of Cologne

This is the cover page to a 1612 folio edition of of the collected works (Opera omnia) of Saint Bede (672 - 735) , the Father of English History.

The most fascinating part of this attractive cover sheet is the panorama of 17th Century Cologne across the bottom. (This edition was infact published in Cologne)

The Cathedral of Cologne (Kölner Dom) can be seen in its unfinished state, with a huge wooden medieval crane (Der Dom-Kran) perched on the South tower. Construction of the Cathedral began in 1248 work halted in 1473 before it was completed. For the next 400 years the city skyline was dominated by the incompleted cathedral and the crane on the South tower, which became a symbol of Cologne. The immense structure was finally completed according to the original plans over the course of nearly four decades between 1842 and 1880.
