The Alpine Landscape

The magnificent landscapes and panoramas of the
Swiss Alps have captivated artists for centuries.
During the Romantic age, the Alps and Swiss mountain
peasants symbolized an arcadian ideal of man living
close to nature.
Later during the Victorian era's boom in tourism,
handcolored engravings and lithographs of Alpine
scenes became a popular souvenir, collected by
travelers from Europe and beyond.
A number of extraordinary Swiss artists -- often
known as the "Little Masters"or "Schweitzer
Kleinmeister" -- dedicated themselves to
documenting life in the Alps. Among the most renowed
of these artists were Gabriel Lory (the father
and the son), Christian von Mechel, Franz Niklaus
Koenig and Johann Ludwig Aberli.
